The Chicago Cubs dyed the playing surface at Wrigley Field green Saturday in observance of St. Patrick’s Day.
Though the Cubs are currently stationed in Arizona for Spring Training, the grounds crew at their home ballpark gave the friendly confines a green streak.
“The Cubs are proud of the Irish heritage in this city and wanted to pay homage to it,” owner Joe Ricketts said.
Chicago is known for its large Irish-American population and the city is a hotbed of festivities around St. Patrick’s Day. For more than 50 years it has dyed the Chicago River green in celebration.
“Wrigley Field is every bit as much a Chicago icon as the river is,” Ricketts said. “So we figured, why not have both of them be green this St. Paddy’s Day?”
The Cubs administered green dye to the grass in the outfield, infield and even the grass in foul territory.
“I saw some pictures on Instagram and it looked pretty cool,” Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo said. “I can’t wait to get home and play on it.”
